Things I Ponder

24 03 2010
  • I filled out my census form today. There’s space to fill out information for up to 10 people in a single household. I’m curious how many households need that many spaces? I’m not trying to be judgmental, I understand that other cultures tend to have more than just the nuclear family in a single home. I’m just curious how many people live in a home like that? On the other hand, how many families have 8+ kids in the home all at the same time? If we believe reality TV there’s a bunch!
  • Mentioned on Twitter today: I have a coffee mug and a tea mug. Is it weird that I feel a little guilty when I drink the wrong beverage out one or the other?
  • Also from a conversation on Twitter: The Pentagon has 5 sides and 5 rings. Was that intentional? Did they have a need for 6 rings and condensed it into 5 because that was cooler? Did they only need 4 and added a 5th to round things out? What’s in the center? From pictures it just looks like a courtyard, but what do you plant in the courtyard of The Pentagon? Who plants it? Seems like a terrible waste of a security clearance on a gardener.
  • “The eyes are the window to the soul”  ” Los ojos son las ventanas del alma”  Seriously? My fortune cookie needed to be translated into Spanish? No lottery numbers, no kanji… just Spanish. Only in Texas.
  • Justified is turning out to be a really good show. The accents seem a little heavy-handed to me, but I’ve never met anyone from Kentucky so I don’t know for sure. The name of the show comes from the fact that the 2 people he’s shot on the show pulled first and therefore the shootings were “justified”. Is he just going to keep shooting people? How many “justified” shootings can a person really have before they just become trigger-happy? Also, the place in the Brad Paisley song is real!!! Although apparently, Timothy Olyphant got out alive.
  • Super Sticky Post-It notes have changed my life! They stick to ANYTHING!  ❤ ❤ ❤

Just a peek into the random things that crossed my brain today.

Photo Dump Post

4 01 2010

I don’t plan on doing a 2009 retrospective, I think I’d rather just move on and think about next year.  I do plan on giving my self some weekly goals, which I also plan on tracking here on the blog, should be starting that up next week!  In the mean time, here’s some photos from our holiday:

The mantle.  We had to take down the stockings… they were in danger of burning!

The required puppy dog picture (btw Tami, your drawing of Missy is AWESOME!! Your gift is comming soon!)

The table for Christmas dinner.

What I spent a large portion of my holiday doing.

Merry Christmas

25 12 2009

I’m finding words difficult this Christmas. I’m trying to be deep and eloquent… maybe that’s just not my style 🙂

Since I can’t find the words myself, I’m going to leave you with two things. The lyrics to my favorite Christmas song and a picture of our first Christmas tree from 6 years ago. Every ornament was hand made by us because we couldn’t really afford to buy them. I’m getting all weepy and nostalgic just thinking about how incredibly awesome that tree was simply because it was ours, in our first apartment. I don’t think I’ll ever have a tree more beautiful.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa’s on his way;
He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother’s child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I’m offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you!

Merry Christmas to you and yours from me, The Hubby, and Missy.

It’s Comming On Christmas…

3 12 2009

It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river I could skate away on

But it don’t snow here
It stays pretty green
I’m going to make a lot of money
Then I’m going to quit this crazy scene
Oh I wish I had a river I could skate away on

I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
I wish I had a river I could skate away on

Yep… It’s that time of year again.  The holidays have snuck up one me once again.  I’m having trouble getting into the spirit this year.  It feels like it should only be early November… Yet here we are, Thanksgiving’s over, Christmas parties are coming up, I need to start buying christmas gifts.  I’m getting through the motions properly.  I’m organizing a Secret Santa gift exchange for my friends, organizing a party for my small group, we’ve adopted a family from a shelter for battered women and children… I’m just not feeling it.  Maybe it’s because it took so long to get cold around here.  I was wearing t-shirts up until the week before Thanksgiving, now it’s going to be snowing tomorrow.  Snow.  In Ausin.

Come to think of it… I’m not feeling much right now.  I’ve got so much stuff I feel like I HAVE to do it’s hard to get motivated to do the things I WANT to do.  That’s the main reason it’s been so quiet around here lately.  I feel like I’ve been run ragged… It’s been one thing after another since September.  Maybe things will calm down after Christmas?  Experience tells me I shouldn’t hold my breath.

In much happier news, The Hubby told me last night he wants to help me get my craft room set up.  We need to move a few things around but it shouldn’t be too much work.  Maybe this weekend 🙂

Maybe if I set up the Christmas tree after dinner I’ll feel more in the holiday spirit.

As you may or may not know, the Race for the Cure here in Austin was yesterday.  Unfortunately I was laid up in bed and was not able to walk.  I almost met my goal of $200 (it’s not too late to donate, I’m $25 short of my goal).  Breast Cancer is a disease that, at least it seems to me, touches more lives than it doesn’t.  This is evidenced by recent events in the Shide Devils, a World of Warcraft Guild that a couple of my fellow bloggers are members of.  They have set up a donation site and raffle for their guild member who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.  I will be donating a couple of hand made WoW themed scarves to the raffle.  If you would like to donate/enter the raffle you can follow the above link for more information.

I hope you can help out in some way with this cause.  If you aren’t able to, please get yourself and/or the women around you checked for breast cancer.  “Early detection is the best protection.”  For more information on breast cancer and self-exams you can visit the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s website.

How I Met The Hubby

29 09 2009

Recently Bre asked “how did you meet?”  The story of how I met The Hubby is an interesting one, at least I think so.  I thought I’d share.  I’m not sure how the people involved in the story will feel about their names being on the interwebs (some people are funny about that stuff) so the names are changed to protect the innocent.

I was 17, working at Quizno’s (a sandwhich shop if you’re not familiar with it).  I had made friends with a co-worker, Chris.  He was going out with some friends to see a band downtown and invited me along.  I think we both got off early that day (3 or 4 in the afternoon) and decided to get some dinner since we weren’t going to be heading downtown until 8 or 9.  We decided to eat at Bennigan’s.  When we walk in the door this couple gets up and the guy is waving at Chris.  They’re clearly friends.  Chris introduces me to them, Kelly and Tank, and we go to our respective tables.  When the couple is getting ready to leave they come over to our table and Tank looks at Chris with this adorable, mischevious grin and says “So, Chris, have you heard about Kelly’s new boy-toy?”  She’s obviously embarassed and tells us the guys name how long they’ve been dating… I’m not even paying attention any more because it dawns on me that they’re not “together”… they’re just having dinner…  I get all excited because he’s really cute and he keeps looking at me even though he’s talking to Chris.  Kelly and Tank leave, then about 2 mins later Chris gets a call.  After he tells me that Tank has decided to come downtown tonight, he’s going to meet us there!  Anybody think it’s a coincidence?

The evening goes on, Tank and I end up spending most of the evening hanging out, we really hit it off.  That was June 28th, 2001.  We started dating about a month after that.  We got engaged on Oct 27th, 2001 and were married June 30th, 2002; a year and 2 days after we met.

A few interesting details:

The phone call, I found out later, went something like this:  “Chris, dude, why didn’t you tell me she was hot?”  “Ummm, I don’t know” Chris had a girlfriend at the time, we were strictly friends, “Well, I’ll be there tonight, I may be a little late, but I’ll be there!”  “Ok, cool!”

Also, in case it wasn’t obvious, Tank’s reason for comming over and informing us of Kelly’s boyfriend was so that I would know they weren’t dating, which was a good move since I had made that assumption.  Incidentally, the “boy-toy” is now Kelly’s husband 🙂
